Graphic Design in Motorsports

Motorsports are exciting, they’re thrilling and eye-catching to anyone watching. Be honest with yourself, who doesn’t like to see machines go fast and have someone piloting it? But what thrills me just as much as the amazing athletes behind these machines is the overall marketing and design that goes into these events.

Top Tier design in IndyCar.

The way in which these events are promoted from social media to billboards is extraordinary. Nothing and I mean nothing is half done. From the graphics online to all of their print media it is all designed to a T and with purpose. Take this image below for example. This billboard shows 3 major design perspectives: the logo, informational text and an image. Three very simple things but how they combined them together is so effective. How the logo sits off to the left and is clear from the text beside it that states “Where tradition never stops”. This meaning is linked in regards to the image of Takuma Sato drinking milk which is a tradition for all of the Indy 500 winners to do. The image and text link a message. This billboard is powerful because yes, it is simple but it gets you fired up just looking at it for what is to come in May.

What could be?

From a personal perspective, I wish my sport of BMX Racing did somethings similar to that of motorsport. Not putting down my sport at all because I love it. But I just think teams and the organisation need to spend more money in regards to marketing and promotion. To me having worked in other sports as a designer and been around it. It’s sad to go to a BMX race and have it look mediocre. This is something that I wish to change as I venture into the design field to help my sport grow and become more professional.

The affect.

Overall, marketing and design play a huge role in anything really. If you want something to grow and change. Something has to be done. This isn’t just in sport but in everyday life. From influencers to businesses. It is important to put the extra little bit of money into having someone design and promote your product to attract customers and fans.
